What is Annual Giving?

Annual Giving is our yearly appeal for donations, similar to the practice in American schools. Since 2006, the German International School Washington D.C. has asked members, colleagues and friends of the GISW to support our Annual Giving campaign.

Why is the revenue from tuition not sufficient? The GISW is supported by both tuition contributions and subsidies from the German government. These funds cover all our operating costs, but they don’t cover special projects that enrich our students’ learning experience.

What are Annual Giving contributions used for?

To make sure that all students benefit from these donations and that they are used for the right purpose at the right time, the Anual GivingTeam carefully consults with teachers. Every dollar is proportionally distributed among the projects of the year.

What are the advantages of Annual Giving?

The DSW is committed to making our special brand of education as affordable to as many families as possible and thus maintain the diverse school community we cherish.  An Annual Giving gift is tax deductible for American as well German taxpayers, whereas tuition is not. Also, an Annual Giving gift may qualify for a matching contribution from your employer, allowing you to double your support!

How much am I expected to donate?

Each and every dollar counts! Big or small your donation makes a statement, “I am IN! I believe in our community.” A high participation rate sends a very important signal, within and outside the school community.
Are you IN?

What if I cannot give during the five week campaign?

You can pledge now and defer payment until later. You can also pay in installments, if that is more convenient for you. All pledge payments must be received by the close of Annual Giving which is June 30.

Do matching gifts count?

Yes. When you make a gift to the German International School, you can double or triple its impact by checking with your employer to see if they participate in a matching gift program. Many companies and foundations match the value of charitable gifts made by employees and their spouses and retirees.

Who else is asked to give?

Everyone in the GISW community. Annual Giving seeks support from current and past parents, alumni, trustees, faculty and staff, past faculty and staff, grandparents and friends. Every gift matters.

What is the time period for Annual Giving?

Each year, the GISW focuses its Annual Giving efforts on a five week campaign. However, Annual Giving runs from July 1st through June 30 and donations can be made at any time of the year.

How much am I expected to give?

It is our hope that GISW will be among your family’s top philanthropic priorities. Individual gifts to Annual Giving range from $10 to $10,000 or more. Only you can decide how much you wish to commit. Please know that no matter the amount, the German International School Washington D.C. needs and appreciates every gift we receive.

Where does the money go?

The German International School Washington D.C. stays in touch with its alumni around the globe and is very proud of their achievements.
