Grades 5-12: End of Year Letter

Dear School Community,

My first year at the German School Washington D.C. was a new experience in a long teaching career. Some things are new and a little different from my previous schools, but school is school and the fundamental building blocks remain the same. It was comforting to be able to contribute a lot of the experience that I have gathered over the years. At the same time, I learned a lot of new, exciting and surprising things. This year, I particularly enjoyed the German Christmas Market, the Winter Ball, the well-rehearsed musical and theatrical performances of our students, and of course the Award Ceremony for the winners of the competition of German Schools Abroad by the German Chambers of Industry and Commerce (DIHK) in Berlin. A truly eventful year!

Our students here at the German School impressed me with their various skills and special talents, with their sense of responsibility and their social competencies. It is a true pleasure to work with our students and to accompany them on part of their life’s journey. A special thank-you to our Student Council (SMV) for the work we accomplished in a trusting relationship.

The faculty of the DSW whose work with our students is very impressive, is highly knowledgeable and has welcomed me as their new Head of School with open arms and trust. I would like to thank the faculty, the Parent Council, the Friends of the German School, the Business Office staff, and the Board of Directors for a good working relationship. In addition, I thank the numerous volunteers for their time and effort. What would we do without you?

We do not only say farewell to our three legends, Dr. Dreher, Ms. Hochheim, and Ms. Wrausmann, who are retiring from the DSW after decades of teaching, but also to Ms. Bartels, Ms. Becker, Ms. Bohn, Mr. Frederich, Ms. Friend, Ms. Ivancsics Mr. Joerg, Mr. Hinrichs and Ms. Pibal. I truly enjoyed working with them and will miss them all very much! I wish them only the best in their new endeavors.

I would like to congratulate our graduates who left the school with the Realschul-certificate or the Abitur once again and wish them lots of success in their studies and careers. Please keep in contact with the DSW. We are always delighted to hear from our alumni, be it by Facebook, email or a personal visit.

I look forward to welcoming all new and returning families at the Welcome Night on August 17th, 2016 at 4:30pm in the Assembly Hall of the main building. Please save the date.

Best wishes for a relaxing summer,

Petra Palenzatis, OStD‘

Head of School
