Information

March 30, 2020:  Gov. Larry Hogan issued a stay-at-home order for Marylanders which means no one should leave their home for any reason other than essential work, to get food or other fundamental reason. The order takes effect at 8 pm.
For the GISW this means:

1. All GISW buildings will be closed for the foreseeable future.

2. In order to give our teachers and parents more time to prepare, we are postponing both parent nights that were scheduled for tonight to Thursday at the same time.

Distance Learning until Friday, April 24th, 2020.

We are here for you as we continue to prepare for the 2020/21 school year. The Admissions Office remains open. Please complete this form and we will contact you: https://giswashington.org/request-information-package.html

We welcome Ben Hebebrand

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Ben Hebebrand as the permanent Business Director of GISW. Ben, who has served on an interim basis since mid-December 2019, will be responsible for the oversight of operational administrative departments such as Enrollment, Finance, Advancement, Communications, Food Service, Facilities, Book Store, Health Services, Reception Desk, and Transportation Services.

“I am thrilled and honored to have been selected for this role at GISW,” Ben told us. “In my initial 6 weeks as the interim Director, I have gotten to know the administrative team, and we are all committed to work as a team on behalf of our students and teachers. I would also like to get to know members of the parent community – and in that spirit, please drop by and allow me to introduce myself to you.” During the interview process, Ben repeatedly told us about his interest, if not passion, to work in an international and intercultural community. He believes that the diversity of cultural backgrounds leads to wonderful collaboration that results in superior solutions.

Ben’s professional background includes 30 years of U.S. independent school experience, having served as Head of School at Madison Country Day School (WI), Quest Academy (Chicago, IL), and Evansville Day School (IN). He also has served as Head of Middle School, Dean of Students, and Teacher of German and History at the Atlanta International School (GA). “At the root of all great schools is a commitment to building a great sense of community. The most important community forms itself in the classrooms, distinguished by the teacher-student relationship.”

Ben holds a Bachelor’s degree in English and Intercultural Studies from Warren Wilson College (NC), a master’s degree in Communications from Georgia State University (Atlanta, GA), and a master’s-level certification in Gifted Education from Northwestern University (IL).

Please take the opportunity to get to know Ben and hear from him during the Membership Meeting tomorrow night, Thursday, Feb. 13 at 7pm.

Ben is fluent in German and English, having grown up in Munich, Germany. He has intermediate language skills in French and Spanish. His wife Joy will move to the D.C. area this spring, and we look forward to welcoming her to the GISW community as well. Their five children range in ages from 18 to 27; and live throughout the country.
