Sixty years ago in 1961, a small group of engaged parents got together to found the “German School Washington” for 33 students which has now grown into our German International School Washington D.C. with over 500 students. We are excited to celebrate 60 years since the founding of GISW.
In commemoration of this important milestone, we are planning an entertaining year-long celebration to reflect on our school’s rich history here in the nation’s capital. We plan to gather our extended GISW community (spanning 6 decades) in celebration of 60 years of friendship and connection. We welcome all former, current, and future GISW students, families, teachers, staff, neighbors, and friends to join us at one or more of the following 60th anniversary events. Information about upcoming 60th anniversary events currently in the planning stages will be posted here and announced in the Wednesday Mail.
To lay a strong foundation for our school’s next 10 years (and beyond), our 60th anniversary celebrations will be centered around three themes:
We thank the two designers Caroline Heinen and Danielle Lair-Ferrari who jointly created the 60 Years GISW logo that is featured at the top of this page. Learn more about the concept and the artists of the anniversary logo.
We invite you to contribute your creative ideas and help us plan for these celebratory events by volunteering for one of our 60th anniversary committees. If you are interested in serving on a committee or in assisting us with alumni outreach, please reach out to our Advancement Director, Jennifer Precht at jprecht@giswashington.org.
