Annual Giving is an ongoing campaign to raise funds each year that allow us to move more quickly on our Capital Expenditure plan, further the efforts of the school’s strategic plan, fund projects that aren’t covered by our annual budget, and continue to offer an exceptional education for our students and experience for our community. We are very grateful for any level of financial support, which helps the GISW afford the many opportunities that have made our school a leader in independent and international education for generations.

Frequently Asked Questions
To find out more about Annual Giving we invite you to explore the following topics.
You may be familiar with a capital campaign that raises money toward the construction of a building or major facility upgrade. And you may also be familiar with emergency fundraising to provide support for an international disaster or community crisis. An Annual Fund is an ongoing campaign to raise funds each year that allow us to move more quickly on our Capital Expenditure plan, further the efforts of the school’s strategic plan, fund projects that aren’t covered by our annual budget, and continue to offer an exceptional education for our students and experience for our community.
Unlike other schools in the area, the GISW is a unique hybrid institution.
We have families that receive at least partial reimbursement of their child’s tuition from their employer, typically expatriates here for a temporary posting. We also have local families in our community, many of whom remain with us through their child’s education and pay full tuition.
Each year, we receive funding from the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs in several ways:
- $1.8M to finance experienced teachers sent from Germany
- $500K toward operating expenses
- a rent-free campus in an expensive real estate market
- additional periodic funding for significant maintenance projects, such as last summer’s campus improvements.
This funding allows us to keep tuition costs lower than other local independent schools while offering a high-quality education.
As a hybrid model, neither entirely a state-funded nor a fee-paying school, we all benefit from the generous financial support of the German government as well as the excellent resources available to us as a tuition-based school. For prospective families, we are just one option in a market full of excellent schools (private as well as public).
Like many independent schools, the tuition and fees (plus our financial support from Germany) covers salaries, benefits, and basic operational costs.
The school’s Annual Fund provides an additional revenue stream for supplementing the opportunities that provide an excellent experience for our students, enhancing our program offerings and maintaining our position as a top international school in the DC area.
Only you can decide how much you wish to commit. Our goal is to have as many community members participate as possible. We appreciate every gift and recognize the contributions all our families, faculty and staff bring to the GISW community. We reap the benefits of a rich diversity within our community, but there’s one thing we all have in common – our connection to the GISW. Every donation received is an indication of the value we all place in the school and our community.
Yes. When you make a gift to the German International School, you can double or triple its impact by checking with your employer to see if they participate in a matching gift program. Many companies and foundations match the value of charitable gifts made by employees and their spouses and retirees. Companies that have matched donations in the past include Bank of America, Verizon, and Volkswagen.
While the campaign runs at different times, Annual Giving runs from July 1st through June 30 and donations can be made at any time of the school year. All pledge payments must be received by June 30 of the current school year.
