How can parents get involved in school life?

Parents play an important role at the German International School Washingotn D.C. (GISW). Each homeroom is represented by two representatives on the Parent Council. The representatives bring forward the concerns of parents to educators and teachers and, when indicated, to the school and Preschool principals, the Business Office and the Board. This strong community of parents provides a forum to discuss parents’ ideas and suggestions leading to initiatives that can be implemented cooperatively.

Many families are members of Friends of the German International School Washington D.C., founded in 1969. The goal of this foundation is to promote and support the school and its students through concerted activities. The biggest annual fundraiser that the “Friends” host is the German Christmas Market. At this market they sell a variety of crafts created by their weekly crafts group. They also sponsor and organize activities such as the ballroom dance lessons and the related annual ball.

The cafeteria of the GISW depends on parent support in form of volunteers. Each volunteer helps out every few weeks depending on personal availability. The work is light kitchen work under direct supervision and guidance of our Director of Food Services and Operations. Tasks include food preparation and handing our food to children. You will not be asked to clean dishes. Please contact the Director of Food Services and Operations at if you can spare a few hours a month.

Another area to which you can contribute effectively as a parent is as a member of the Board of Directors of the German School Society. The purpose of this society is to establish and maintain an institution of general education, including the Preschool and the German Language School (GLC). The Board of the German School Society consists of 9 members whose term of office is 3-9 years. Each board member is part of one of the committees, which actively participate in various areas of school life.

Beyond the official bodies, parents can volunteer as chaperones, at the Sports Department or at events, such as the 5k Oktoberfest Run, Welcome Night, Summer Festival and Open Houses.

No matter how much you want to get involved – at GISW you will find many opportunities to contribute your knowledge and experience and to become an integral part of your children’s school life.

The German International School Washington D.C. stays in touch with its alumni around the globe and is very proud of their achievements.
