Who can participate in the 5k Oktoberfest Run?

The 5k Oktoberfest Run is open to runners and walkers of all ages. If you don’t want to race but would like to be a volunteer, we need help before and during the race, at the race start and along the course. The volunteer sign-up link is in the Wednesday Mail and in the Members' Area of the school website.


Where is the race?

The race is at the German International School Washington D.C./German Language School at 8617 Chateau Drive, Potomac, MD 20854.

What is contained in the race packet? Is anything contained in the race packet necessary to be worn/used during the run?

Your entry fee includes your bib and timing chip, along with a race day t-shirt. Please do not remove the timing chip from the bib. You will need to wear the bib number assigned to you during the event.

All registered 5K participants will receive a gender-specific, short-sleeve dri-fit shirt. All registered Fun Run participants will receive a cotton t-shirt and participation ribbon. Shirts and requested shirt sizes are not guaranteed for runners who register after the early-bird deadline. Extra shirts will be available for sale on race day ($10 fun run shirt, $15 dri-fit 5K shirt).


Where can I park?

The school parking lot will be reserved for volunteers, vendors and sponsors. Satellite parking will be available at Bolger Conference Center, Parking Lot 5 (9600 Newbridge Drive, Potomac). Shuttle buses will run continuously during the following hours: 7:00 – 8:00 am, 10:30 – 2:30 pm.


Will there be a bag storage service on site?

Yes, bags and jackets can be stored at the unattended coat check in a classroom. The German International School is not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged items.


How do I volunteer?

The volunteer sign-up link is in the Wednesday Mail and in the Members' Area of the school website.


Can I receive social hours for my volunteer service?

German International School students receive social hours credits for their volunteer service. Social hour forms are available in the Guidance Counselor’s office or on the school website under Campus Life – Counselor grades 5-12. To receive credit, forms must be signed by the event coordinator.

Students from other schools should have any volunteer activity approved by their SSL coordinator before signing up for the activity.





What if the event is cancelled?

The 5K Oktoberfest Run & Fun Run will take place rain or shine. Only a “force majeure” will be cause for cancellation. In the event of a cancellation, there are no refunds. Race packets will not be mailed.


What if I cannot participate once I have registered?

All registrations are final and entry fees will not be refunded. No exceptions will be made. If you are unable to participate, you can still pick up your race packets during scheduled packet pickup locations and hours, as well as on race day. Race packets will not be mailed.


Can I transfer my entry to another person?

Yes, until online registration closes. After the online registration deadline, transfers are no longer possible.


Can I register for the race after online registration has closed?

If the race is not sold out, you may come to packet pickup and register for the full registration fee. We can only accept cash and check payments.


Can someone else pick up my bib number and race packet?

Race packets will only be given to family, friends or anyone else other than the participant providing a photocopy or image of the participant’s government-issued photo I.D. No exceptions will be made.




Is the 5K Oktoberfest Run timed?

Yes, the race is chip-timed. Timing chips will be part of your running bib.


Where on the course can my friends/family watch the race?

We recommend having your friends and family cheer you on at the start/finish line.


Is the 5K Oktoberfest Run walker-friendly?

Yes, the 5k Oktoberfest Run is an event for all fitness levels and ages. It is up to you if you want to run or walk.  


Can I run with headphones?

Yes, however, the use of iPods or mp3 players is strongly discouraged for safety reasons. Please take caution if you plan on running with music.


Are strollers allowed on the course?

Yes, however, for the safety of all runners, we ask these participants to start towards the back of the running group. Dogs, bicycles, scooters and roller skates are prohibited.


Is child care available during the run? How much is it and what is the age group?

Yes, childcare will be provided for all age groups. If you as a parent participate in the 5K run, volunteers will watch your children while you run. Children can be dropped off at 8:15 am at the start line and will cheer on their parents as they cross the finish line.


Will there be food at the start/finish area?

There will be water and energy bars provided free of charge at the start/finish line. Food for spectators and participants can be purchased at the Oktoberfest celebration. Please bring cash if you plan to purchase any food or drink.


Where are restrooms located?

Restroom facilities are readily available in the school.




Is there an age requirement for the kids’ Fun Run?

No, the kids’ Fun Run is open to all ages.


May I run alongside my children during their run?

Absolutely! We want this to be a positive experience for both you and your child. Accompanying adults do not have to register for the Fun Run.


Is the Fun Run timed?

The Fun Run is not chip-timed but a clock is present at the finish line.


Will there be awards for Fun runners?

Every child receives an official Fun Run finisher’s ribbon.


Will there be activities for kids after the fun run?

After the races, we invite all kids to our kids’ fun area at the Oktoberfest celebration which includes games, arts and crafts, face painting, a soccer field, snacks, and more. Your child will be entertained for hours!





Will there be awards after the race?

Yes, there will be an award ceremony at 10:30 am at the Oktoberfest celebration.

I didn’t pick up my race packet. Where can I pick it up?

All unclaimed race packets will be kept until 3:00 pm on Saturday. After this, packets will be available until the following Saturday at the German International School’s front desk. Unclaimed packets will not be shipped.


My bib is missing. What should I do?

If your race bib is missing, please email events@giswashington.org.


I placed among the top three runners in my age group but had to leave early. Where can I pick up my medal?

All unclaimed awards will be kept until the following Saturday at the German International School’s front desk. Unclaimed awards will not be shipped.


I ordered the wrong shirt (size/gender). Can I exchange it?

Shirts can be exchanged after 8:00 am on race day while supplies last.


My results are missing or wrong.

Please email events@giswashington.org and we will work with the timing company to get your results corrected. Please allow up to 24 hours for updated results.




Is the Oktoberfest only for runners?

The Oktoberfest celebration is open to the public – runners and non-runners.


Is there an admission fee to enter the Oktoberfest celebration?

No, the Oktoberfest celebration is free of charge and open to everyone. Please join us!
