Dear Parents and Students of the Elementary School (SES through fourth grade),
This year’s charity project will once again benefit the Children’s Inn at the NIH. The collection of canned goods was very successful in the last few years, and we would like to take this project on again this Thanksgiving season.
The Children’s Inn, comparable with a hotel setting, is located by the National Institute of Health providing assistance to the families of children being treated at the NIH for life-threatening illnesses. NIH’s young patients come from all corners of the United States, and even from overseas, to receive long-term and intensive treatments. Many families are not in a financial position to pay for a hotel room on a long-term basis while also carrying the financial responsibility of medical treatments. The Children’s Inn provides families with a “home away from home” during their difficult and stressful times. This enables families to remain close to their children while they are receiving medical treatments.
The Children’s Inn provides families with a community kitchen in which they have a chance to prepare their own meals and dinners. However, due to logistic and financial issues, many families are often unable to purchase food items.
Starting Monday, November 14th through Friday, November 18th, 2016 at 9:00 am, we will collect canned goods and other food donations for the Children’s Inn in front of the library of the Elementary School.
On November 18th 2016, with assistance from all the students (forming a long assembly line), we will move all the food items into vehicles to donate them to the Children’s Inn.
The following items are especially needed for the pantries at the Inn:
- Ramen, Pasta Mixes, Mac ’n Cheese, and - Canned Tuna, Fish, and Chicken - Garbanzo Beans/Chick Peas/Peas - Olive Oil/Vegetable Oil and cooking spices - Individual cereals - Honey - Nutella
|
- Waffle/Pancake Mix - Flour - Jello/Pudding/Fruit Cups - Chili - Gluten-Free Items - Canned Fruit - Mushrooms - canned - Small Boxes of Raisins - Frankfurters (canned) |
Please check the expiration date on food you donate. Please ensure the items do not need to be refrigerated.
I will also introduce the Children’s Inn to each class so that the students understand exactly whom the canned goods will be benefitting and why this project is important. Furthermore, the students will assist in making one big, poster-sized, Thanksgiving card for the Children’s Inn in which the Elementary School of the German School Washington D.C. wishes them a “Happy Thanksgiving”. The students will each color a paper turkey and glue their drawings to the card.
We are looking forward to working together on such a great cause!
Sincerely,
Ulrike Schweitzer, ES Counselor; in teamwork with the ES Principal and ES Colleagues
