The History of GISW at a Glance

From Vision to Institution: What began in the 1950s as a grassroots initiative to promote German language and culture has evolved into a prestigious, state-recognized "School of Encounter."

The school’s journey is defined by the dedicated engagement of our community and a steadfast commitment to building a bridge between German and American cultures.

The Founding Phase (1957–1960)

  • Nov. 1957 – Feb. 1958: Annemarie Chrétien initiates the idea of a German school in Washington. On February 5, 1958, she opens a kindergarten and a language school.
  • Oct. 1960: The German School Society is officially established by seven founding members, chaired by Wolfgang Opfermann

The Early Years (1961–1966)

  • September 1961: The school officially opens its doors to 33 children in a rented private home on MacArthur Boulevard in D.C.
  • March 1963: Due to growing enrollment, the school moves to McLean, Virginia, into the facilities of the Chesterbrook Methodist Church.
  • 1965/66: The student body grows to nearly 200. For the first time, plans are set in motion for a systematic curriculum leading to the Abitur.

The Move to Potomac and the First Graduating Classes (1966–1974)

  • August 1966: The school moves into its first owned building on Logan Drive in Potomac, Maryland (a temporary pavilion structure).
  • 1968–1971: A major milestone is reached: the school holds its first Abitur (German high school graduation) examinations.
  • Dezember 1970: Groundbreaking ceremony for the current main campus as enrollment surpasses 500 students.

Establishing the Current Campus & Expanding Programs (1975–1980)

  • March 19, 1975: 640 students and 42 teachers move into the modern new facility on Chateau Drive.
  • May 10, 1975: Official inauguration of the building by Minister of State Karl Mörsch. The new facility features an indoor swimming pool and an expansive library.
  • 1976/77: Founding of the "German Language Courses" (GLC) for American students on Saturdays.

Anniversaries, Athletic Success & Global Politics (1981–1990)

  • 1981/82: GISW soccer and swim teams achieve their first major victories in regional tournaments.
  • 1986/87: Hannelore Kohl visits the school to celebrate its 25th anniversary.
  • 1989/90: German Reunification is celebrated with exhibitions and a festive service at the National Cathedral.

Sustainability, Expansion & the New Elementary School (1991–2004)

  • 1994/95: The "ECO-Group" is founded to strengthen students' environmental awareness.
  • 1999/2000: Inauguration of the modern new Elementary School building on Chateau Drive.
  • 2001/02: The Alumni Association is established to mark the school’s 40th anniversary.

Excellence, Innovation & Distinguished Guests (2005–2011)

  • 2007/08: Following a rigorous inspection, GISW is awarded the "Excellent German School Abroad" seal of quality.
  • 2010/11: Completion of the new Science Wing to provide state-of-the-art learning facilities.
  • March 2011: World Cup soccer champion Steffi Jones visits the school, engages in discussions with students, and performs the ceremonial kickoff on the new soccer field.

Today

The GISW is firmly established as a "School of Encounter" in the nation's capital. It serves as a vibrant hub for cultural exchange, bringing together students of many nationalities and fostering a truly international community.
