Biology explains phenomena in terms of several levels of complexity. In elementary school level, biological concepts are conveyed through direct experiences and knowledge of organisms and organs; in middle school these concepts are supported by views through microscopes and extended to cells and ecosystems. In the upper grades the study of biological concepts focuses on the molecular level, supported by solid grounding in organic chemistry.
At each level, connection is made between what is being studied and what is newly discovered and announced in the news. Of particular interest, for example, are recent breakthroughs in the fields of health and nutrition, biotechnology / genetic engineering, ecology and neuroscience.
The history-bending achievements of scientific inquiry that we consider – such as the theory of evolution, greatly influence the self-understanding and world view of our students.
