Please keep your children in grades 1 to 4 at home on Friday, December 5.

We are closely monitoring the MCPS decision for Friday in case they announce a delayed start due to the weather.

Rhetoric Meets Science

GISW Alumni Achieve 4th Place at the National Final of “Jugend präsentiert”

Berlin / Potomac, September 28, 2025 – Combining scientific curiosity with outstanding stage presence, two alumni of the German International School Washington D.C. (GISW), Hashim E. and Johannes L., achieved an impressive 4th place in the national final of the renowned presentation competition “Jugend präsentiert.”

Back in May 2025, the pair had already secured their spot in the national final with their presentation “From Floor to Fork – the Famous 5-Second Rule” at the regional competition for German schools abroad, successfully standing out against strong competition. As a special distinction, they also earned participation in the Digital Presentation Academy, an intensive training program with professional rhetoric coaches from the University of Tübingen.

The national final took place on September 28, 2025, in the Concert Hall of the Berlin University of the Arts. More than 9,000 students across Germany and at German schools abroad took part in the competition, 600 of them reached a regional final. Of the 130 students who qualified for the national final, only 17 came from German schools abroad. The challenge: to deliver a six-minute STEM presentation on the theme “Universe” using exclusively digital media.

In this highly competitive setting, Hashim E. and Johannes L. secured 4th place; a major success for two GISW alumni. The livestream of the event can be viewed here:

GISW warmly congratulates Hashim E. and Johannes L. on their outstanding achievement and extends its thanks to all teachers and parents who supported them along the way. Their success demonstrates how solid scientific knowledge and professional rhetoric can go hand in hand and serves as an inspiration for current and future GISW students to participate in the school’s own “Jugend präsentiert” competition.

Hashim and Johannes’ remarkable journey began with their registration for the school-level “Jugend präsentiert” competition. This year, interested students can register for the GISW internal competition until October 17, 2025. Registrations should be sent via e-mail to fsadekstolz@giswashington.org or blueg@giswashington.org.
